The 1901 Census of England and Wales
The 1901 Census of England and Wales was taken on the evening of Sunday 31st March 1901 with all persons recorded in the residence in which they spent the night (rather than their home address if they were staying elsewhere).

Census returns from the 1901 census for individuals of the surname Jacomb, including the standard variants Jacombs, Jacombe, Jacom and Jacomb-Hood, and also miss-spellings/transcriptions which have been spotted are provided on Jacomb.com.

You are strongly recommended to read the additional notes on how exactly the 1901 census has been arranged on Jacomb.com.

One important note to bear in mind is when one compares the relative numbers of owners of each surname variant in the 1881 census here on Jacomb.com to those in the 1901 census. With a rising population level in England and Wales over the 1881-1901 period one would expect there to be greater numbers of each surname in the 1901 census than in the 1881 census. However, the data does not show this. There is not the same proportional increase in Jacomb, Jacombs, Jacombe and Jacom populations. Furthermore, the number of Jacomb-Hoods appears to drop by more than 75%.

Errors in misspellings have been identified in a number of instances. On analysis of these populations and study of the Civil Registration indexes it appears that neither census contains the full complement of Jacombs & variants that it should do. Over time, however, Jacomb.com aims to identify where these errors are and locate the missing individuals.

Unlike the 1881 census on Jacomb.com which contains full transcriptions of individuals, the following pages contain only census data from the freely-searchable index of the Public Record Offices's (PRO) 1901 Census Online. Since there is a cost to view the full transcriptions of these individuals on the PRO website, it is uneconomical for Jacomb.com to purchase all the transcriptions of Jacombs in the index.

Transcriptions purchased and submitted to Jacomb.com by visitors will be included in these pages. Please feel free to submit transcriptions - the more we get, the more useful these pages.

The census returns are indexed by county (under the boundaries as they were in 1901). Those counties without a hyperlink do not have any entries for the name Jacomb or its possible variations.
