Censuses have been conducted in England and Wales every 10 years since 1801 (with the exception of 1941 due to WWII). However names were not methodically included in the censuses before 1841 and these returns themselves are now almost completely destroyed. Returns from the 1931 census were destroyed by bombing in WWII. The names and personal details of all people staying overnight at a particular address on the census date were recorded by the census enumerator. The dates on which the censuses were conducted are as follows:
Census information is subject to the 100 year rule in that it is not released until 100 years have passed since the end of the year in which it was taken. This is why the 1901 census is being released in 2002 rather than 2001. The censuses of England and Wales also includes within its coverage the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. The 1881 census (released to public scrutiny in 1982) is the census most widely available to the public, having been converted to microfiche (and more recently CD-ROM) format by the Genealogical Society of Utah. Microfiche editions of the census can be studied at family history centres and local record offices around the country, as well as at the Family Records Centre in London. The census for 1891 is also available to study on microfiche, but at present is less well distributed (in its complete state) around the country, however many libraries and record offices have copies of returns for their local area. The 1901 census, released at 9am British time on January 2nd, 2002 by the Public Record Office (PRO), is the first British census to be released on the internet. It was transcribed and census images digitised by QinetiQ (formerly DERA) on a Private Finance Initiative put out by the PRO. The census index may be searched online for free but minimal charges are in place if a full transcription or image of the census return are required (both also online). The entries in the censuses for the surname Jacomb and its variant spellings are included here on Jacomb.com. Where a census on Jacomb.com is marked as 'partially complete' not all the Jacomb/Jacombs/Jacombe/Jacom/Jacomb-Hood entries to be found within that census appear on this site yet, though entries will be added as they are found with the intention of listing all relevant entries as soon as possible. Censuses: (as of 15/10/2005) Jacomb entries in the 1841
Census of England and Wales (partially complete) You may find it useful to read the additional notes on the censuses first before studying the indexes. | ||||
