Jacombs of Kimcote & Walton, Leicestershire UK

Kimcote Church. 18th June 2005.
Kimcote Church

KIMCOTE parish in Leicestershire was home to a family of Jacombs throughout the 1700s.

Church Pew
Evidently the Jacomb family had their own particular seat in the church where they sat during services. See the Cobley Family History website for further details.

Military Folk
A Jacomb from Walton served in the 2nd (Queens) Dragoon Guards in the late 18th-early 19th century. Private Robert Jacomb enlisted in the regiment on 22/02/1793, aged 25, and served for 21 years 193 days until 11/07/1814 when he was discharged as a "consequence of being worn out from Chronic Rheumatism". On his discharge he is described as being "about 46 Years of Age, is 5 Feet 8 inches in height, l[ight]t. brown Hair, Grey eyes, Fair Complexion, by Trade a Taylor [sic]." His discharge papers can be found at the National Archives in Kew under the reference WO 97/72/4.

Wills
Two wills made by Kimcote parish Jacombs are held by the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland.

The earlier of the two wills was made by Robert Jacomb of Walton on 3rd October 1727 in which he made his son, Robert, sole executor, and to whom he left his land ("One Quarter or fourth part of One Yard Land Lying and being Dispersedly in the open and Common fields of Walton and Kimcott [sic] and in Knaptoft Tee"), money and the rest of his estate. Robert Jacomb (senior) died on 2nd December 1743, his will was proven 6 days later.

The later will was made by another Robert Jacomb of Walton and was proven in 1771.

Graves
Kimcote graveyard was overgrown with metre-tall grass when visited in June 2005, though the four Jacomb headstones present there were relatively easy to find. The eldest Jacomb headstone here dates from 1704.

A public footpath runs along the edge of the graveyard at the east end of the church (to the right in the photo above). Walking in from the gate, two of the graves are situated 2m off to the left of the path in line with the church and the headstones of 2 others, having been cleared at some point, are now located next to each other alongside the footpath on the right a little further along.
