One of the web's most popular genealogy sites. Ancestry.com boasts over
1 billion names in its databases which can be searched online.

marriages and deaths) in the UK. Loads of info on certificates and what
they can tell us about the persons in them.

A website devoted to genealogy with links to hundreds of useful sources
and information sites. Well laid out and easy to navigate, this site is
indispensable.
Commonwealth War Graves Commision (CWGC)

A searchable database of memorials for those who lost their lives fighting
for their respective commonwealth country. The database covers both WWI
& WWII. There are 14 Jacombs listed on the site.
FamilySearch - http://www.familysearch.com
The website of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons)
which contains a wealth of data from civil and church records around the
world. The site is fully search-enabled and uses the LDS's own International
Genealogical Index (IGI).
Free BMD - http://freebmd.rootsweb.com
A useful resource of transcribed entries in the Birth, Marriage and Death
indexes for England and Wales. Not complete by any meaning of the word
but people can sign up to help with the transcribing at this site to speed
up the process.
General Register Office - http://www.statistics.gov.uk/registration/default.asp
The General Register Office holds the civil registration documents of
all births, marriages and deaths registered in England and Wales. Certificates
can be ordered from here and you can find out more about the registration
process.
Genuki - http://www.genuki.org.uk
The site describes itself as a "virtual reference library of genealogical
information that is of particular relevance to the UK & Ireland"
and that's exactly what it is. Loads of info and definitely the place
to start from when studying UK genealogy.
Rootsweb - http://www.rootsweb.com
Another large website boasting a database of millions of entries of named
individuals. You can join mailing lists for individual surnames and post
your own family tree online.
The National Archives - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
The National Archives of England and Wales holds many important records
from the last thousand years of the countries' histories including both
public and private documents like government reports and probates respectively.
It is also the holder of the decennial Censuses and the 1901 census can
be viewed online at this site.
