| British
Patent Applications
(from the 'Alphabetical Index of Patentees of
Inventions' published by the British Patent Office.)
The index covers the period from when patents
were first realised right up to the present day, i.e. from 2nd March 1617
(14 James I) to present. The first patent application by a Jacomb however
was in 1825. Further information about obtaining full details of patent
applications may be found at the British
Patent Office website.
Please note: The following
table lists applications only, not patents actually granted. These applications
may or may not have resulted in a patent being granted.
As of 28/05/2003 this index covers Jacomb
patent applications made between 1617 and 1964. The years 1916 and 1919
have not currently been checked. Click on a patent subject where
linked for further information on that patent application.

Honours
British Knighthoods conferred upon
Jacombs upto 1906
(from the book 'The Knights of England' by William
A. Shaw, published by the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood,
London: 1906.)
The 1906 book The Knights of England
by William A. Shaw is, by its own title, 'a complete record from the
earliest time to the present day of the knights of all the orders of chivalry
in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and of knights bachelors; Incorporating
a complete list of knights bachelors dubbed in Ireland, compiled by G.
D. Burtchaell'.
The book - in two volumes - has been published
by the Central Chancery of the Orders
of Knighthood in London, the department of the Lord Chancellor's office
which authorises knighthoods and so this book can be seen as authoritative
and official. It should be noted that the book covers knighthoods conferred
only up to 1906.
There are no records in the book
of any Jacombs having been knighted before 1906.
All conceivable phonetic variants and spellings of the name have
been checked.
British Honours and Awards to Jacombs,
1900-1955
(Published in Honours supplements of 'The London
Gazette')

An O.B.E., Military Division |
The
London Gazette, being the official newspaper of the government, publicly
announces the conferring of honours upon subjects by the British establishment.
The table below details the honours received by Jacombs in the first 55
years of the 20th century. Honours may have been conferred upons Jacombs
before this period however the searchable online
archive of the Gazette does not extend to earlier editions at present.
Types of Honours & Awards which are announced
in the London Gazette include, but are not limited to the following: Victoria
Cross, Military Medal, Knighthood, M.B.E. etc.
Please note: The London
Gazette publishes honours in supplements to regular editions of the paper.
These supplements are published only occasionally. The date in the first
column is the date an issue of the Gazette was published. The supplement
to that issue may not necessarily have been published on the same date
but a few days later. The date in the first column should not be read
as the date on which the announcement of honours was made - one should
refer directly to the supplement itself for this detail.
The first two entries were published in The Times newspaper the day after
it says they were published in The London Gazette. The original London
Gazette articles have not been checked and are not on their website, suggesting
the articles were in the main body of the paper and not in a dedicated
honours supplement.

City of London Freedom
Admissions
(from the 'Alphabets of Freedom Admissions'
(14 volumes) in the Corporation of London Record Office.) |

An example of the certificate
received by Freemen of the City of London |
Individuals have been granted the Freedom of
the City of London for centuries to enable them to carry out their trades
within the City of London. They first had to be a freeman of a City livery
company before they could be granted the Freedom of the City of London.
The Guildhall Library in London holds the records of the majority of London
livery companies and their freedom admissions. The Corporation
of London Record Office (CLRO) holds the records of admissions to the
Freedom of the City of London. City freedom records are incomplete prior
to 1681, but from 1681 to 1940 records are comprehensive, consisting of
3,500 monthly bundles of documents. These admission documents are arranged
by the month the individual became free and are indexed in the Alphabets
of Freedom Admissions (CLRO ref. CF 28/1-14) from which the records below
have been extracted. They include how the individual was admitted to the
freedom: 'S' - by servitude (having completed an apprenticeship); 'P' -
by patrimony (being the child of a freeman); 'R' - by redemption (by purchasing
the freedom).

Boyd's Burial Index, 1538-1853
(from Boyd's Burial Index in the Guildhall Library, London)
Boyd's Burial Index records nearly 250,000 burials that took place within the London metropolis between the years 1538 and 1853. It was compiled by the late Percival Boyd and completed in the 1930s and records the burials mainly of adult men. It contains a fraction of the total burials made in London over the 300 coverage period, but does present a useful and easily checkable resource for finding London folk's burials.
