Past News:

5th Anniversary
30/07/2006. Raymond Thomas Jacomb joins researchers.

Raymond has been added to the list of researchers studying Jacombs.

23/06/2006. 100 years of PPR wills now online.

Coverage of Jacomb wills proven in the Principal Probate Registry extended to over 100 years.

Today comes an update to the Wills & Administrations on Jacomb.com, adding 10 years of entries in the post-1858 indexes of Wills & Administrations granted in England and Wales for the years 1951-1960. The index on Jacomb.com now covers over 100 years of wills and administrations: 1858-1960.

22/06/2006. 4 new Jacombs in 1841 Census.

Middlesex county section begun for 1841 Census with four Jacombs included.

The household of Philip Jacomb, listed in the census as a 'Hot Presser', has been added to the 1841 census page. This takes the total number of Jacomb entries from the 1841 census now on Jacomb.com up to 87.

21/06/2006. Military Records section updated.

WW2 dead commemorated plus Jacomb military service details from the last 300 years added.

In the UK Military Records section there is now a page commemorating the five Jacombs who died in WW2. In addition I've added a variety of details on the military service given by a variety of Jacombs dating back to the 1700s to the Military Records page.

16/06/2006. Lower Broadheath page updated.

Photos and road layout diagram added to page explaining the naming of Jacomb Road, Close and Drive.

14/06/2006. New records for 5th Anniversary.

A raft of updates planned for Jacomb.com which is 5 years old on 15th June 2006.

Over the next few days and weeks there will be a series of updates and new records added to the website to both consolidate and expand upon the Jacomb information available. New additions will include military, court and census records, along with others, with updates to the Jacombs in print section, coat of arms page and others.

RSS: You can keep up-to-date with these updates and additions by subscribing to the new Jacomb.com RSS newsfeed. This is free, easy to do, and you don't have to fill in any forms or give out an email address to do it - it can be as simple as clicking a button!.

Firefox, Opera and Safari (Mac only) web browsers have built-in support for displaying RSS feeds and make subscribing easy, simply click this feed icon Subscribe to Jacomb.com's RSS feed.. You can also use an RSS aggregator such as MyYahoo to display feeds.

Records added today:

  • Jacombs in Boyd's Burial Index, an index to some of those folk buried in London between 1538 and 1853, added to Miscellaneous Records page.

15/01/2006. Burials. Sue Pay has very kindly submitted details of four burials at Chalk Church, Gravesend, Kent which have been added to the Burials page. Thank you to Sue.

15/10/2005. Jacombs in the 1841, 1861 & 1871 Censuses. A number of Jacomb, Jacombs and Jacombe entries in the 1841, 1861 and 1871 Censuses of England & Wales have now been added to the site. As of today the number of Jacomb, Jacombs, Jacombe, Jacom and Jacomb-Hood entries transcribed from each census stands at:

More entries will be added in the near future as they come to light.

25/09/2005. Jacombs of Kimcote & Walton, Leics. UK. There's now a summary of information on this page about a Robert Jacomb of Walton who served in the Dragoon Guards from 1793-1814.

I've also added a transcription of the will of Jonathan Jacombe, a singleman of St Giles-without-Cripplegate in London, which was proven in May 1670. Jonathan is the brother of Josia Jacombe, pewterer, whose own will transcript already resides in the PCC wills section, mis-spelt in the original document as 'Jacombes'.

19/09/2005. UK Marriages. I've added 16 years of marriages to the marriages index. The index now covers the period 1837-1916. Also added are two marriage certificates from 1907. Thank you to Terry Jacombs who has submitted one of those certificates added today.

09/09/2005. Jacombs of Kimcote & Walton, Leics. UK. This article contains information on the Jacombs who lived in Kimcote & Walton in the eighteenth century, including headstone photos and inscriptions.

Also added is 'Jacomb's Patent Grates'. In 1826 the 'Register of the Arts and Sciences' magazine published details of a patent taken out by Mr. [Charles] Jacomb for a more efficient method of burning fuel. The patent lays out an idea of using a rotating grate to increase the combustion of the smoke and gas produced from burning fuel, thereby improving fuel economy. This is achieved by rotating the already lit grate after fresh fuel has been added causing the fresh fuel to lie beneath the ignited fuel; the smoke from the fresh fuel passes up through the ignited fuel and is combusted in the process, leading to a more complete combustion process and a reduction in the quantity of smoke emitted from the grate.

29/08/2005. Thank you to Michael Jacombs in Australia who has kindly contributed a number of certificates to the site, the first of which has been added today.

02/01/2005. First addition of 2005: Jacomb Education Records. This page can be found in the 'UK Records' section.

New Year's Eve, 31/12/2004. Jacomb entries in the index to Wills and Administrations proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury have now been added to the site.

Many thanks go to Alan Pay and Tony Dell who have contibuted documents which have been added to the site today.

Updates in 2004: 23/05/2004. Jacomb entries in the 1891 Census of England & Wales have now been added to the site.

09/05/2004. Today marks the first in a series of updates to be made across Jacomb.com over the next few weeks. Some comes from 3 days of research I carried out in London at the end of March 2004.

There is now content in the Military Records section: a page commemorating the five Jacombs who died in WWI and indexes of those Jacombs whose WWI service records and medal entitlements are held at the National Archives in Kew.

An important addition to the site is the list of Jacombs who became Freemen of the City of London between 1681 and 1940 which may be found on the Miscellaneous Records page. Other records currently on Jacomb.com are mainly 19th/20th century and a desire of mine is to include earlier records where possible. This list of Freemen is, I hope, the first step in that direction.

Still to come:
A number of pages remain virtually untouched since they were first written in 2001 and they need to be brought up-to-date. A few of the areas currently highlighted for renovation and/or increased content include Past Jacombs, Surname Derivation, the Distribution pages, Coats of Arms, and Jacombs In Print.

Jacombs in the 1891 Census of England and Wales will be included soon.

Matt Jacomb.

07/11/2003. The banner adverts at the top and bottom of each page on the website have been removed today after a presence of about 4 months. Their presence was only a temporary measure until the start of this month purely to simplify the administration of the website. The adverts will not be returning in the future. Adverts will, however, continue to be present on the Message Board and Guestbook which are hosted externally from Jacomb.com.

Overhauls of a number of pages/sections are planned for the next few months, work on which is currently underway. Areas currently highlighted for renovation and/or increased content include Past Jacombs, Jacombs In Print, Miscellaneous Records and Military Records.

01/08/2003. Firstly a big thank you must go to Phil Jacombs from Sydney, Australia who has kindly allowed his research into the naming of Jacombs Road, Richmond, in British Columbia, Canada to be published on Jacomb.com. You can read about the naming of Jacombs Road in the Road/Place Names section.

Secondly, something which caught my attention when searching the web was a short snippet of information regarding a settlement in India named Jacombpura. Whilst further research into this place is necessary what information is currently available has been added to the Road/Place Names section.

Thirdly, many apologies to those visitors who have visited the Guestbook over the past few months only to discover lewd, automated postings from sex sites. There are settings in place to try to prevent this from happening but they are still getting through. I always delete them as soon as they are brought to my attention, almost always within 2 days. Also, due to spam postings in the Guestbook approximately 8 genuine Jacomb posts from 2002 have vanished. Please be assured that backups of the Guestbook are made regularly and these messages have not been lost forever, they will be added to the site at a later date.

08/04/2003. Jacomb.com has recently been indexed on Cyndi's List, one of the web's foremost genealogical directories. It has been a long time in coming (the site was submitted April 2002) but most welcome.

A new set of records are now on Jacomb.com detailing the Knighthoods, Honours and Awards conferred upon Jacombs. This has been in the works for sometime but only in the last few days did it become possible to complete it. It may be seen that in fact no knighthoods were granted to Jacombs in the period up to 1906 however it was felt important to include the research anyway for completeness.

Only honours conferred upto 1955 have been included in the Honours section to fit in with Jacomb.com's new Records Policy.

Major Update: 24/11/2002. The Jacomb & variant entries in the 1901 Census are now on Jacomb.com. They are in a much more useful form than the alphabetical list on the PRO Census website index, having been sorted by household. The entries are still devoid of the full address, middle names/initials, household hierarchy, marital status, employment status and infirmity for which one would need to pay on the PRO website. However other resources on Jacomb.com can provide useful information with regard to these details.

The aim is to put as many full 1901 census transcriptions on the site to enhance the limited information from the census index. If you have purchased a full Jacomb transcription at the PRO site or transcribed Jacomb details from a 1901 census image and would like to contribute this to Jacomb.com please contact the webmaster.

The second arrival in this update is information on the naming of Jacomb Road, Close & Drive on the Lower Broadheath page.

Thirdly comes an update on the Wills & Administrations on Jacomb.com, adding entries in the post-1858 indexes of Wills & Administrations granted in England and Wales for the years 1931-1950. The index on Jacomb.com now covers the years 1858-1950.

Finally comes the first installment of Jacomb entries in the Index of British Patent applications. This installment covers applications made between 1617 - 1934 and can be found under 'UK Records' on the Miscellaneous Records page. Further years will follow.

04/08/2002. They're finally here. The Court Service has replied to Jacomb.com's request to put entries from the National Probate Calendars online and have confirmed they have no objections to this. This gives Jacomb.com the all-clear to put post-1858 Jacomb/ Jacombs/ Jacombe/ Jacom/ Jacomb-Hood entries in the indexes of wills and administrations granted in England and Wales by the Principal Probate Registry (PPR). It also gives the all-clear to reproduce the content of these grants and wills.

The first installment covering PPR grants made in the period 1858 - 1930 has been placed in the UK Records section on Jacomb.com with further years to follow. Please note though that not everyone left a will, and of those that were written not all were proven in court after the person died.

Major News: 23/06/2002. 1 year old!! Jacomb.com is now a year old and steadily increasing in visitor numbers. Many thanks to everyone who has visited and encouraged the site to grow.

After a year of persistence Jacomb.com is now accessible from the major search engine Google.com. This breakthrough finally occurred in May 2002 and the site is now top of the search results when anyone searches for 'jacomb' at Google.com and Yahoo.com (which is powered by Google). Jacomb.com is also the top search result for 'jacomb' on AOL. In a second major coup, Jacomb.com has also been added to the Open Directory Project's website - the largest human-edited directory on the web and has been submitted for addition to Cyndi's List genealogy site. With luck these links should alert more people to Jacomb.com and encourage more exchanges of related information and bring Jacombs of all varieties a little closer.

No reply has been received from the Court Service despite a follow-up letter being sent regarding the publishing on Jacomb.com of post-1858 wills.

The Borthwick Institute in York which holds wills of the Prerogative Court of York (pre-1858) has replied to an enquiry regarding publication. However, they are currently in negotiations with a commercial firm to place many of their genealogical indexes on the internet, where they can be searched for a fee and thus at the moment are unable to grant any other requests until complete.

A query is to be sent to the Public Records Office regarding publication of Prerogative Court of Canterbury (pre-1858) wills and another to HMSO regarding post-1858 wills.

02/04/2002. Another update to the 1881 Census records with 9 new individuals whose names were mis-spelt as 'LACOMBE' (should be 'JACOMBS') in Warwickshire. The Census Distribution page has been updated also.

Jacomb.com is currently awaiting a response from the Court Service as to whether permission will be granted to publish post-1858 will entries (from the national indexes of probate) for Jacombs on this site. Permission for the publication of pre-1858 wills, i.e., Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) wills (see below) and Prerogative Court of York wills is also being investigated.

28/02/2002. The 1881 Census data on Jacomb.com have been updated with 22 new individuals whose names were mis-spelt or mis-indexed in the original index. Notes have been added to the listings identifying those who are mis-spelt or mis-indexed and the correct version of the surname. The Census Distribution page has been updated in light of this latest analysis.

There's now a little coat-of-arms icon which appears in your IE Explorer browser's address box when you click on Jacomb.com in your 'Favourites' menu.

01/02/2002. After a review of the completeness of the 1881 census entries on Jacomb.com there were a large number of Jacomb-Hoods missing. These have now been located in Sussex and Kent and will be incorporated into the census listings and statistics soon.

27/01/2002. The site has just had a major overhaul, removing the frames which dominated the previous incarnation of the site. Uploading was managed a week later than anticipated due to uploading software problems. If you spot any errors or glitches please email Matt and let him know at webmaster@jacomb.com.

Before the Public Record Office's 1901 Census of England & Wales website was taken down temporarily for technical, Jacomb.com began extracting names from the freely searchable index which are now online here. Complete index entries for the names Jacom, Jacombe & Jacomb-Hood are online, as is an alphabetical listing for the surname Jacomb from 'A' to 'E'. More to come when the PRO site is back up and running.

Work is well under way on compiling Jacomb will entries from the indexes of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC). If permission is granted from the right bodies they should start appearing on the site soon. This is an important source for early Jacombs as the index covers wills dating back to 1383 AD (however the first PCC Jacomb will dates from 1659).
