Civil Registration in England and Wales began on July 1st 1837 with records being taken of all births, marriages and deaths occurring. The country was divided into registration districts, the district registrar of each making a record in registers for each birth and death occurring therein. Marriage records were kept by the different denominations, for example, the Catholic Church kept their own registers. Civil (registry office) marriages were carried out by the registrar and records made by him. The registrars and the various denominations (for marriages) sent the records of each event to the Registrar General on a quarter-yearly basis, allowing a national index to be created. Thus records are grouped and indexed in quarters: the March quarter (January, February and March), June quarter (April, May and June), September quarter (July, August and September) and December quarter (October, November and December). An event will appear in the index quarter in which it was registered, not necessarily when it took place. For example, a child may have been born in December but the birth not registered until January of the new year. Thus the birth will appear in the index of the March quarter of the new year and not in the preceding December quarter. The records of births, marriages and deaths covering England and Wales are held by the General Register Office (or GRO, formerly St. Catherine's House). The register or local record office retains the original registers in which the events were recorded. The public cannot view the original records but you can search the quarterly indexes to locate the entry of an individual and then send off for a certified copy of the original record. The indexes may be viewed on microfiche/film at the Family Records Centre in London, local record offices, libraries and family history centres around the country. The entries in the indexes for the surname Jacomb and its variant spellings are included here on Jacomb.com. Special permission has been granted by Her Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for this purpose. To view the permission click here. Please note: Entries of births and marriages for the 20th century (with the sole exception of the year 1900) have not been transcribed here pending investigation of the 1998 Data Protection Act and whether it is permitted to publish records on people who may be living. Deaths are unaffected and are as up-to-date as possible. Look out for updates on this which will appear here. Indexes: (as of 03/03/2008) Jacomb
